Bangkok Airways began operating its first charter flights in 1968 under the name "Sahakol Air", the first private company in Thailand.
In 1986 Bangkok Airways officially began its operations as the first private airline for domestic flights; initially the schedules offered flights from Bangkok to Krabi, Korat and Surin. Currently, Bangkok Airways operates scheduled flights on more than 20 major destinations in Thailand. The company operates scheduled international flights on Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, China, Japan and the Maldives.

The fleet currently includes 6 ATR 72-500, 9 ATR 72-600, 12 Airbus 319 and 9 Airbus 320. Each aircraft is decorated with different liveries of different exotic destinations.
Bangkok Airways has also invested part of its capital in infrastructure and maintenance at its airports in Samui, Sukhothai and Trat. These investments offer Thailand airports capable of increasing the flow of air traffic to this country.

Bangkok Airwyas is the only Asian airline to have won the Skytrax Best Regional Airlines for six consecutive years from 2004 to 2009, in 2014, 2016 and 2017. As a member of the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), Bangkok Airways continues to guarantee comfort and standard safety levels for all passengers.
Bangkok Airways is a reliable and competitive company, in addition to being called a "boutique" company. The concept of boutiques normally refers to a type of targeted business. Thanks to this philosophy, Bangkok Airways is positioned as a "boutique airline" that aims at personalized passenger service and the development of new exotic and cultural destinations.
Offering a complete service in every category such as boutique lounges, boutique airports, appetizing menus, new aircraft, and an exclusive service for its passengers, Bangkok Airways is part of a category that distinguishes it from other competing companies.
Bangkok Airways began air transport services for the first time in 1968 - established as "Sahakol Air", it became the first private airline in Thailand. Initially, the airline provided rental services through its first operating aircraft, "Trade Wind", a two-engine two-seater aircraft. Regular rental assignments were from the American Construction Company (OICC), the USOM and a number of other organizations, which at the time were engaged in the exploration of oil and gas in the Gulf of Thailand.
Due to the rapid growth of tourism and business investment in Thailand, air transport has become an increasingly important aspect contributing to both the economic growth of the Kingdom and the development of infrastructure, becoming an important destination able to accommodate several million foreign visitors year.

In order to meet the growing demand for air transport, Bangkok Airways officially began operations in 1986 as the country's first privately owned domestic airline; initially it offers scheduled flights from Bangkok to Krabi, Korat and Surin. Currently, Bangkok Airways has obtained permits to operate scheduled flights on 20 major main routes covering almost all major tourist destinations in Thailand. In addition, the airline has also obtained permits to fly internationally in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Japan.

Bangkok Airways has also invested in the construction and maintenance of its privately managed airports in Samui, Sukhothai and Trat. These developments provide Thailand with more air transport hubs to help increase the volume of air traffic.
